The process of promoting learning or gaining information, skills, values, beliefs, and behaviours is education. Teaching, instruction, storytelling, debate, and guided study are part of instructional methods. Education always takes place under educators’ supervision, but learners may also educate themselves. In formal or informal settings, education may take place and any experience that has a formative impact on the way one thinks, feels, or acts can be called educational.

The world is evolving at an ever-quickening pace, which means that more exponentially, a lot of information becomes outdated and unreliable. Therefore, the emphasis shifts to teaching-learning skills: to acquire new knowledge quickly and in the most agile way possible. Finnish schools have even started to move away from regular subject-focused curricula, instead of introducing developments such as phenomenon-based learning, where students study concepts such as climate change.


The study of how humans learn in educational environments, the efficacy of educational approaches, the psychology of teaching, and the social psychology of schools as organizations is educational psychology. In the general population and in sub-populations such as gifted children and those with particular disabilities, social psychology is concerned with the mechanisms of educational achievement.


As adults educated young people in the knowledge and skills considered important in their culture, education started in prehistory. This was done orally and through imitation in pre-literate societies. Story-telling transferred awareness, beliefs, and talents from generation to generation. As societies started to broaden their understanding beyond abilities that could be readily acquired through imitation, formal education grew. At the time of the Middle Kingdom, schools existed in Egypt.
